London Calling! Audra to make West End debut in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill this summer

Lady Day photoUK fans rejoice – Audra McDonald will be reprising the role of Billie Holiday on London’s West End for nine weeks beginning June 25, 2016.

Audra won her record-breaking sixth Tony Award for her portrayal of Lady Day in 2014, winning Best Actress in a Play.

Following the run of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Audra returns to New York to resume performances in Shuffle Along, Or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed at the Music Box Theatre.

Audra bio photoDue to overwhelming demand, a second performance has been added to Audra McDonald’s January 17 appearance at London’s Leicester Square Theater. Following the announcement of Audra’s first performance in London in over ten years, tickets went like hot cakes and the concert sold out in under four hours.

The award-winning singer brings her characteristic insight and emotion for a matinee and evening performance on January 17, 2016. Audra’s last performance in London was in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall, when she performed the works of Richard Rogers in the Last Night of the BBC Proms.

On her return to the states, Audra leads the cast of Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation and All That Followed, beginning previews on March 14 at the Music Box Theater.

This just in: Audra McDonald officially joins cast of film adaptation of Michael John LaChiusa’s “Hello Again”

audra-mcdonald-2013-theater-autumn-de-wilde-2 copyThe rumors are true! As announced today, Audra McDonald joins the cast of the new film adaptation of Michael John LaChiusa’s musical Hello Again. Acting alongside Martha Plimpton, T.R. Knight, Rumer Willis, Jenna Ushkowitz, Nolan Gerard Funk, Sam Underwood, Tyler Blackburn, and Al Calderon, Audra stars in the upcoming musical as Sally, also known as “The Actress.”

Hello Again is based on the 1897 play La Ronde written by Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler and was first presented Off-Broadway in 1993 at the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre at Lincoln Center. The story centers around the lives of ten different characters over the course of the 20th century.

The screenplay for Hello Again was written by Cory Krueckeberg with music and lyrics by Michael John LaChiusa and is produced by Ash Christian, Tom Gustafson, Cory Krueckeberg, Hunter Arnold, Devon Schneider, Gregory Rae, and Carl D. White.

On November 19, Audra McDonald participates in Covenant House Sleep Out to support homeless youth

coventhosueEarlier this year, Audra McDonald joined fellow Broadway performers to raise money for the Covenant House Sleep Out campaign and raised over $26,000 to support the organization’s work with homeless youth across the country. The funds will allow Covenant House to rescue and provide meals and shelter to homeless young people around the country.

The six-time Tony winner was welcomed to the Covenant House board in 2014 and this will be here second year participating in the annual Sleep Out. Audra will sleep outside with members of the Sleep Out: Executive Edition on November 19 in solidarity with homeless youth across the United States.

Audra McDonald makes Australian debut with performances in Melbourne and Sydney

Audra in Australia (1)On the heels of her North American tour, Audra McDonald makes her Australian debut with a one-night performance on October 31, 2015 at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall, followed by three performances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House from November 5 to 7.

The six-time Tony winner has been dazzling audiences across America, bringing her “downright inspirational” interpretations of American classics to stages from California to Connecticut (Los Angeles Times).

Watch Audra McDonald perform live at the White House in “A Celebration of American Creativity”

White HouseOn October 14, Audra McDonald joins President Obama and the First Lady of the United States at the White House for an evening celebrating the American canon, featuring music ranging from hip-hop to jazz standards. “A Celebration of American Creativity: In Performance at the White House,” honors the 50th anniversary of the National Foundation of the Arts and Humanities Act and will be broadcast online and recorded for a feature on PBS.

The evening also includes performances by Buddy Guy, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Keb’ Mo’, Smokey Robinson, Trombone Shorty, Esperanza Spalding, Brian Stokes Mitchell, James Taylor, and Usher.

“In Performance at the White House” has showcased American cultural traditions since its inception in 1978, with performances by legendary artists such as Tony Bennett, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, B.B. King, and Vladimir Horowitz.
